Samantha Stosur aiming to defend her US Open title – Tennis News
Former world number four, Samantha Stosur is looking forward to repeat her US Open heroics of the last season at the Flushing Meadows. In the year 2011, the Aussie defeated the former world number one, Serena Williams, in
straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows.
In an interview Stosur said, “I think everyone suffers from nerves. Sometimes, certain people make a bigger deal about it than what it is. It depends on what you're talking about. I don't think you'd find anyone who doesn't
get a little bit nervous. It's just how you handle it. The more you get through it, the better you get at handling situations. "It is what it is. It's fine whether you're talked of as being the favourite or not. At this point during the tournament, it doesn't
really matter. Everyone is starting from scratch, and obviously, things become clearer as the weeks go on.”
The 28-year-old tennis ace received a shocking upset at the Australian Open in the start of this year. She miserably failed at the second round of Wimbledon Championships against the Arantxa Rus by 2-6, 6-0, 4-6. In the first
round of the London Olympics, the fifth seeded lost after a fierce battle against the Spanish underdog, Carla Suarez Navarro by 6-3, 5-7, 8-10.
The world number seven could not go past the third round of the Rogers Cup held in early August. She received a straight sets upset at the hands of the 16th seeded Czech, Lucie Safarova. Her performance
slightly improved as she competed until the quarter-finals at the Western and Southern Open held on the hard courts of Cincinnati.
The right-hander Aussie will defend her title in the US Open tournament starting from Monday. She is drawn against the world number 64, Petra Martic of Croatia. Despite of her outstanding performance at the US Open last year,
she is still not the favourite contender of the title this year. She will have to face tough competition at the hands of the reigning world champions like Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.
The fourth seeded American tennis icon, Williams is the top favourite contender after her Olympic gold medal this year. However, she needs to adopt more proactive game plan and avoid making errors if she intends to reclaim
her lost glory at the Flushing Meadows.
