Samantha Stosur breezes past Carla Suarez Navarro in the opener – Wimbledon Championships 2012
World number five, Samantha Stosur, started the Wimbledon campaign in an emphatic fashion; trashing the 40th ranked Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
The 28-year-old Aussie started the match with a serve hold and soon took a breakthrough in the second game; making it 2-0 in her favour. She held her serve with no pressure at all and cruised to a marvellous lead of 3-0.
Navarro was unable to handle the onslaught and looked a bit worn out. She was very good at the clay courts but failed to prove her worth on grass. It was a lot difficult for the 23-year-old Spaniard when she was broken for the
second time on the trot that gifted an unassailable lead of 4-0 to the Aussie starlet.
Both players held their serves in the following two games and Stosur broke serve for the third time in the seventh game to round off the opening set proceedings. Trailing one set down, the 40th ranked Spaniard looked
like a minnow; failing to test the 28-year-old Aussie at all.
It was the first match to end at the grass courts of Wimbledon. The second set was a bit competitive at the start but the Spaniard lost pace towards the middle phase. Both players held their serves for the first six games to push
the scores to 3-3.
However, Stosur came out with an all-round onslaught and devastated the Spaniard to all corners of the courts; making her life very difficult. She bagged two successive breakthroughs to finish off the first clash of the tournament;
an achievement she had failed to accomplish in the previous two editions of the tournament.
It was a tremendous start to the tournament for the fifth seed Aussie who has always struggled at the grass court Grand Slam Championship. She will lock horns with the winner of the match between the Japanese lucky loser, Misaki
Doi, and the Dutch blonde diva, Aranxta Rus.
Stosur needs to stay focus and take one match at a time. She should forget about the draw and just plan to beat the following opponent. With this strategy, she will reach the advance stages of the tournament with ease.
