Samantha Stosur bulldozes Edina Gallovits to reach round three – US Open 2012
Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, took a major leap in her title defence after she bamboozled the 135th ranked Romanian qualifier, Edina Gallovits, in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. It was a commanding performance from the
Aussie superstar who is eager to repeat the heroics of last year’s US Open campaign at the hard courts of New York.
Stosur begin the match with a serve hold and stamped her authority right away with a breakpoint in the second game. She continued to reign supreme over her rival and bagged another serve hold to extend her lead to 3-0.
The 27-year-old Romanian was trying hard to fight back into the contest but couldn’t break the flow of the fiery serves that Stosur was banging in. She survived a scare in the midst of the opening set to contain the lead to just
two games.
However, the comeback wasn’t completed as she failed to break her rival’s serve and lost the opening phase of the match. The 28-year-old Aussie looked solid as ever; making full use of her pace and accuracy.
The second set was pure class from the Aussie star. She banged in five aces and coupled it up with 13 winners to win three breakpoints on the trot. She was absolutely rocking the show; allowing no opportunity at all to her rival
to take a sigh of relief.
In a post-match interview, Stosur said, "Well, LMFAO was sitting in the box. I met him before my match. I figured there's maybe only going to be one chance you can do that at the US Open with him there. He loves tennis. He's friends
with one of the WTA staff. She was showing him around the centre here. He came by the table and said hi. He's a mad tennis fan and loves playing. It was pretty cool. I thought maybe I would do it after the match, but then I thought I would chicken out, but
then I thought I've got to do it. And I got it out there."
Samantha Stosur plays the 31st seed American, Varvara Lepchenko, in the third round.
