Samantha Stosur conquers Li Na in 3rd Round Robin match – WTA Championships 2011
Seventh seeded Samantha Stosur expelled Chinese super star Li Na in the third Round Robin match of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011.
The two adversaries took up the challenge on indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey. It took Australian Stosur just sixty six minutes to get rid of the French Open titlist Li Na in straight sets of a breadstick and a bagel victory
(6-1, 6-0) on Friday the 28th of October 2011.
Going into the match on Friday, Stosur had the mental edge over Li after winning all of the five matches that the two had contested against each other in their professional careers. Stosur had performed well in the initial set of the match; she not only
served a barrage of kick serves but also exploded some ferocious forehands to completely bewilder Li.
Commencing the first set of the match was the current US Open champion Stosur and she got off to an amazing start as she reeled off straight four games against her adversary by capitalizing on two early breaks; in the second and the fourth game.
It was in the fifth game that Li tried to make a comeback by breaking back but she was eventually restricted to a single game. As Stosur served for the match in the seventh game the two battled a deuce but ultimately Stosur conquered the opening set with
a breadstick victory. She was now one up in the match.
The second set of the match was kicked off by Li and this time she double faulted on her second serve in the first game and endorsed a break to her Aussie rival. On the contrary, Stosur bagged all her service games as well as Li’s and bagged a flawless bagel
set victory to seal the match.
Stosur hit far more aggressively and dominated both the sets of the match. In their sixth meeting, she managed to bag her quickest victory over Li. In addition, she also managed to accomplish almost twice as many points as the French Open titlist and also
capitalized on three out of the five breakpoints.
After her victory, Stosur said, “I'm very happy with the way I played. To come back from a disappointing loss in my last match and do this is great and I have learned a lot from all my previous experiences, so I'm hoping this year will be different”.
Stosur managed to qualify into the semi finals by finishing second in the White Group and will now be playing the first place finisher from the Red Group, who is the current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
