Samantha Stosur defeats Eleni Daniilidou in the main draw – Western & Southern Open 2011
Playing the first round of the Western and Southern Open 2011 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, were Samantha Stosur and Eleni Daniilidou. The Aussie (Stosur) sent the Greek (Daniilidou) staggering back to the
lockers by securing a notable win of 6-3, 6-1 in simply 49 minutes and 13 seconds in a run of the mill play.
Prior to this event the two players had never taken to the courts in their professional career and this was their first meeting.
Daniilidou’s accuracy had failed her and she struck 2 line faults as well as a net ball, but managed to smash an ace during the set.
The 28-year-old (Daniilidou) administered to win 67% of her total service points against Stosur, who was a stronger opponent and completely utilized her forehand to win 21 out of 26 points, accomplishing a grand 81% in her total
service points.
Stosur’s return serve was not as strong as her serve and thus, with an average display of rebounding shots, she won 33% of her total return points, while, the Greek had a poorer return that enabled her to win a pitiable 19% of
her total return points.
The Australian defence was sturdy and she saved the only break point on her serve, hence, she did not allow a single break point opportunity to her opponent. However, she was able to capitalise on 50% of break points won. On the
Contrary the Greek had managed to save 50% of her break points and was unable to win any.
The 27-year-old Aussie had a meticulous serve and struck zero double faults while her opponent had struck another two line faults.
World number 10 Stosur’s assertive ground strokes and well placed shots towards the base line won her 12 out of 17 service points, making it a laudable 71% win in opposition to Daniilidou who was failing with her serve and was
barely managed to win 33% in the total service points of the second set.
Moreover, the Aussie was able to respond back to her opponent’s serve with dominant volleys and drop shots, that had enabled her to win an exceptional 67% of the total return points, while, her opposition mustered a mere 29% of
her total return points.
The Greek was hardly able to save a single break point, and was also unable to capitalise on any break points, as her adversary did not setup a single break point situation. Hence, Stosur won the set in a comprehensive victory
as she was able to break her opponent thrice.
