Samantha Stosur destroys Roberta Vinci in quarterfinal – Rogers Cup 2011
Top ranked Aussie and tenth seed here, Samantha Stosur made her way into the semi-finals of the 2011 Rogers Cup at Rexall Centre in Montreal, Canada after destroying Italian Robert Vinci in straight sets in their quarterfinal match.
In an “easy breezy” match that lasted sixty three minutes, Stosur defeated the Italian 6-4, 6-1 to move on ahead at the event.
Meeting each other for the first, the pair setup a quarterfinal clash after Stosur ousted 2011 French Open titlist Li Na in the third round while Vinci did away with former world number one, Ana Ivanovic. In only her second year
here, Stosur went a notch up in her career best this time around as she bested her 2009 quarterfinal loss to Elena Dementieva here.
Kicking off the quarterfinal match in full swing, Stosur opened serve in the first set and without losing a single point put herself on the scoreboard as she went one up in the game score. Followed closely at her heels by the Italian,
the pair was soon locked in a neck-to-neck run. With no major break coming their ways, the score remain tied at all time. Although Vinci pushed to convert a breakpoint opportunity to her advantage in the seventh game with seven deuces, Stosur eventually prevailed
as she saved the breakpoint. A successful hold of serve later from both players put the scoreboard at 5-4. Receiving in the tenth game, Stosur pushed Vinci to back-to-back errors as she converted a breakpoint to her advantage without losing a single point.
The Aussie went one up in the set score as she closed the first set 6-4.
Boasting an impenetrable defence, Stosur managed to save four of four breakpoint opportunities despite serving two double faults with no aces – a deadly combination. Clinching a 75 percent win on her first serve and an equally
acceptable 64 percent on her second, Stosur clinched a 6-4 win in the first set to take the lead.
Down and definitely out, Vinci failed to put up any challenge in the second set. Once more serving first in the set, Stosur set off on a roll as she continued to win games one after the other. Breaking Vinci one after the other
with minimal point loss on both service and return games, Stosur extended her lead to an impressive five games to none before allowing Vinci any chance to put herself on the scoreboard. Serving for the set at 5-1, Stosur hit back to back aces before closing
the second set with a forehand winner and weak into-the-net return from Vinci. Clinching a breadstick victory in less than 30 minutes, Stosur closed her straight sets victory and secured a spot in the semis.
The Aussie now moves on ahead to play Agnieszka Radwanska in the next round. The Pole defeated German Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-3 to make it to the last four.
