Samantha Stosur downs Petra Cetkovska to reach quarters – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Australian number one, Samantha Stosur, stomps over the Czech contender, Petra Cetkovska, in straight sets at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 29 to book a spot in the final eight at this
blue clay court event which is part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour 2012.
The fifth seed proved her class after dragging down Cetkovska in their second meeting. Both stars last fought each other at the Qatar Ladies Open earlier this season and after pocketing this match, Stosur improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series
against the 27-year-old.
Fifth ranked Stosur enthusiastically entered Park Manzanares and held her serve in the opening game to take the initial lead. The Aussie continued displaying awe-inspiring skills and plucked successive serves until she drew the first blood in the sixth game
and took a 4-2 lead. Apart from losing her serve in the very next game, Stosur cashed in another break chance in the eighth game and then serve out the opener with a 6-3 win.
Stosur kept momentum running in the proceeding set and earned the desiderated break in the third game to leap to a 3-1 lead. After Cetkovska held her serve in the fifth game, the Aussie pocketed the last three games and clicked the set with a 6-2 success.
All in all, the Brisbane native dusted away seven out of eight breakpoints she came across and cashed in four out of five break opportunities to steal the show. She also fully capitalised on several double faults her rival spilled and produced a better first
serve share of 62 per cent as compared to the Czech’s 59 per cent.
Stosur will next face the winner of the match between Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and the Czech qualifier, Lucie Hradecka.
The top seed, Victoria Azarenka, also earned the fame later that day. She overpowered the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, in straight sets in one hour and 26 minutes to progress at this event.
The high flying Belarusian will square off against the French Open titlist, Na Li, in the last eight.
