Samantha Stosur eases through Jamie Hampton in the second round – Family Circle Cup 2012
World number five, Samantha Stosur, had an excellent beginning at the Family Circle Cup, as she outclassed the 92nd ranked local contestant, Jamie Hampton, in the second round battle on Tuesday. The second seeded Aussie
wrapped up victory in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, to move into the third round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event in Charleston, USA.
Stosur took one hour a 19 minutes to tear apart the 22-year-old American opponent with ease. She was absolutely belligerent in the opening set, bagging it with a bagel but had to overcome some late resistance posed by Hampton in
the second set. The second seed was leading 5-2 when she stumbled a bit in the contest but recovered in time to conclude the matchup in her favour.
It was Stosur’s 12th victory of the 2012 WTA circuit, with seven defeats already to her name. The US Open champion is yet to bag a title this year and Charleston seems to be a perfect opportunity for her to end her drought.
Her Tuesday’s matchup didn’t depict her true class, yet she was able to register a comprehensive victory in the end. She delivered merely 54 per cent of her first serve on target, pocketing 26 out of 35 points on it. She broke Hampton five out of nine times
in the match, whilst the 22-year-old could barely register one break point in the entire contest to finish on the losing side in the end.
"I'm really looking forward to this part of the season. I hope I can have a good week here," Stosur said after clearing the opening round of the tournament. "Today I lost serve for the first time when I was serving for the match,
but she played some good points. She probably felt she had nothing to lose and went for it more. But from 5-all I played two good games."
Stosur will take on either the Argentine qualifier, Paula Ormaechea or the unseeded Kazakh opponent Galina Voskoboeva, in the third round of the Family Circle Cup. Ormaechea and Voskoboeva will compete in the second round draw
on Wednesday afternoon.
