Samantha Stosur ends Laura Robson cameo in the fourth round – US Open 2012
Great Britain’s 18-year-old superstar, Laura Robson, couldn’t register a hat-trick of upsets when she locked horns with the 28-year-old Aussie, Samantha Stosur, who is the defending champion of the US Open title at New York. The
fourth round clash for the 89th ranked Briton ended in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6, but her emphatic performance will definitely be remembered for a long period of time and probably sets up a new landmark in the history of woman tennis.
Stosur commented about the match, “I thought it was a good match - I thought I played pretty well. Towards the end there she probably stepped it up another gear when I had those match points, and I couldn't quite get them, but
it was a really good match.”
The 18-year-old Robson also added few words, “It feels like Sam makes you feel you're playing badly because she hits it with so much spin. Her serve is really special. It's hard to get it back. I've never played anyone with a serve
like hers before, so it takes a couple of games to get used to. I had a lot of opportunities I didn't take."
The defending champion started the match with a serve hold and so did her rival. However, the youngster almost gave a little heart-attack to her the Aussie star when she broke her serve in the third game but she wasn’t able to
stamp her authority for long because her opponent fought back in the following game and levelled the scores at 2-2.
No breakpoints were contested until the 10th game was in progress. Robson had to hold serve to keep the set alive but she couldn’t and gifted the first set away to the 28-year-old Aussie. It was a very disappointing
end to the opening phase of the match for the Briton who belligerently fought until the last minute mishap.
Stosur grabbed an early breakpoint in the second set. She kept the lead intact and served for the match before the Briton bounced back to break serve and stay alive. However, she failed to hold serve and lost the opportunity to
play the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the quarters.
