Samantha Stosur knits Julia Goerges in round two - Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
In the fourth clash of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Thursday, the defending champions, Julia Goerges, was ousted by the fifth seed Aussie starlet, Samantha Stosur, in an epic three-setter that lasted an hour and 40 minutes.
With this triumph, Stosur has booked a spot in the quarter-final of the tournament and she will be up against the likes of Russian second seed superstar, Maria Sharapova, who had an easy first matchup against the qualifier to commence
her clay court season.
In a post-match interview, the winner stated, “It was a tough draw for both of us, but I'm obviously happy to come through. There are definitely a bunch of players out there I've never beaten before, but you have to believe the
next time you go out there you'll be able to change something, play better and win. The first time we played she beat me in straight sets and then our second one here last year was a three-setter.”
Despite being ranked higher than the German, Stosur had failed to grab a win against Goerges in their two previous head-to-head clashes so it was a good outcome in every manner for the Aussie starlet. After losing the match, the
defending champions said, “I'm pretty satisfied with my performance today, her serve was just better than mine - she got the one break in the third, and that was the difference."
The match started in terrific fashion for the Aussie who broke serve in the second game and took a lead of 3-0. Goerges dropped another game after holding one serve in the meantime and went down to a trail of 1-5. Both players
swapped breakpoints at the end of the opening set.
Despite losing the opening set, the 21st ranked German stayed focused and broke serve in the opening game of the second set to take a lead. She repeated the similar performance in the fifth game that gave her a resounding
lead of 4-1. Everything was running in her favour and she suddenly found her momentum; won the second set and eased pressure on her nerves a bit but the job was still half done.
A cautious start to the final set witnessed a tight serve holds at both ends before Stosur won the pivotal breakthrough in the fourth game. Both players couldn’t win any more breakpoints and finally the Aussie players registered
a win against the German beauty queen at the age of 28.
