Samantha Stosur outsmarts Ayumi Morita in the first round – Rogers Cup 2011
8th of August, 2011 saw the start of the first round of the Rogers Cup 2011, Toronto, Canada. At the Rexall Centre, the match was set on hard courts, where the Australian Samantha Stosur was playing the Japanese Ayumi
Morita for the first time. Stosur bounced back from a set down to take the lead 4-6, 6-2, 63 against the Japanese Morita.
The world number 42 Morita, committed one double fault and smashed two aces. While her opponent only mustered to throw an ace along with 2 net balls.
Amidst the first set, the 21-year-old Japanese (Morita) allowed the 27-year-old Australian (Stosur) a single break point instead converted two of the three break points she faced. While, Stosur was only able to save one break point
out of the three on her serve.
Morita won 21 out of 35 service points, making it a laudable 60% win against Morita who was struggling with her serve. With wobbly back hand the 21-year old (Morita) was able to win an average 39% of her total return points, which
were 1% less than her opponent's.
The world number 11 Stosur failed because she was unable to win more break points and hence, lost the set 4-6
Stosur perfected her accuracy and made an improvement after her loss in the first set, the world number 11 (Stosur) was able to conquer her opponent by winning 62% of her total service points along with winning a commendable 58%
of her return points in the set and hence, accomplished a total 60% win.
The Japanese’s defence was not as sturdy as her opponent’s and her victory was short lived and she endorsed three break points to her opponent, along with, breaking her opponent once. The Australian defence did not falter as it
capable of saving and winning 50% of Stosur’s break points.
The two had split sets and boarded on a lengthy one hour third set by the end of the second set, with Stosur winning 8 points more that her Japanese opponent.
The Aussie’s performance enhanced as she won the second set and she served one ace, struck no double faults, and succeeded in attaining an exceptional 77% win in total service points against the 21-year-old Japanese.
The 21-year-old with her failing expertise saved 50% of her break points, whereas, the 27-year-old Aussie did not give a single break point instead won 50% of her break points faced.
By bagging 38% percent of total return points and achieving 58% of total points Samantha Stosur qualified to the second round in 1 hour and 59 minutes.
She will either face wild card entry Aleksandra Wozniak or the Israeli Shahar Peer in the second round of the Rogers Cup 2011.
