Samantha Stosur powers down Sara Errani to reach round three – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012
US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, stomped over the Italian star, Sara Errani, in straight sets at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012 on Wednesday. She formulated a 6-3, 7-5 success
against the 25-year-old to book a place in the third round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) red clay court tournament held in Italy.
The Australian number one showed tremendous skills and abilities to take down Errani in their fifth match-up. After earning the glory in one hour and 33 minutes, Stosur not only improved
to a 5-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the Italian but also advanced into the pre-quarters round.
Fifth ranked Stosur made a shaky entry at Foro Italico and gifted away her serve in the fifth game to fall at 2-3. However, she went berserk after that and reeled off the last four games
in a row, eventually bagging the opener with a 6-3 win. The Aussie failed to ward off lone breakpoint she faced but cashed in half of the four break chances to inch towards the fame.
Stosur lost her track again towards the second set and after suffering the first blow in the fourth game, she fell at 1-4. Despite making a fitting reply after that and going on a four-game
rampage, she lost her edge again in the 10th game and levelled the scores at 5-5. However, the Aussie stayed on the right track and capitalised on another break chance in the 11th game, subsequently sealing the set by winning seven games
to five.
All in all, the Aussie produced a lower first serve share of 71 per cent as compared to her rival’s 83 per cent but impressively availed 28 out of 46 points on it. She also amazingly found
13 break opportunities and ended the match with 70 points.
Up next for Stosur is the American wildcard entrant, Venus Williams, who devastated Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova with a breadstick to set-up this outing. The former world number one was
broken once but cashed in four out of 10 break opportunities to formulate a 7-6(7), 6-1 score line in one hour and 35 minutes.
