Samantha Stosur powers down Stefanie Voegele to win the tie - Fed Cup WG II 2012
Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, stamped her authority in the first round tie of Federation Cup World Group II against the Swiss tennis ace, Stefanie Voegele; defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 and giving her country
an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the tie.
Drum rolls were heard all around the arena at the end of every point. Mammoth crowd turned out to witness both these players fighting it out for the second time in their professional career. Earlier they met in the Fed Cup
tie in 2009; in that match, Stosur was forced to work hard for her points as she strained past her opponent in an epic three-setter ending with cumulative scores of 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3.
The Swiss contestant was left with no option but to win this tough draw. The pressure of performing and winning the contest declined her game as she couldn’t handle the stress. Her shots were wayward, landing outside the
bounds of the court. Her frustration was increasing with losing every point and so was the lead of her opponent.
First seven games of the set witnessed no break points, as both players hung on to their serves with Stosur leading the scores 4-3. Voegele failed to hold on to her serve in the next game; gifting points to her opponents
by committing multiple unforced errors. Word number five happily accepted the opportunity to seal the first set win and with a successive serve hold, she entered the second set fuming with confidence with her opponent completely under the cosh.
Stosur utilized her stamina to its optimum, releasing shots from the sweetest part of the racquet and forcing her opponent to cover enormous ground for every return. She broke serve in the first game and doubled the lead
with a successful serve game. With no more breakthroughs in the next four games, scores pushed to 4-2.
Voegele had already surrendered at that stage; it was just a matter of time before the match was over as Stosur broke serve once again to consolidate her lead and diminish any possibility of a comeback. She held her serve
to oust her opponent in commanding fashion.
