Samantha Stosur reaches Paris to remove the tag of 'one-slam wonder' off her – Tennis News
Aussie superstar, Samantha Stosur, has returned to the capital of France to accomplish her goal of removing the tag of 'one-slam wonder'. She will start the year’s second Grand Slam tournament campaign on Monday and look to defy
all the odds and spin the luck in her favour.
Roland Garros is one of the Stosur’s favourite arena but a lot of disappoints also relates to this place. She lost the final of the French Open tournament in 2010 against the Italian tennis ace, Francesca Schiavone. Surprisingly,
she had defeated her in the opening round of the French Open 2009 and cruised into the semi-final stage that registered a successful comeback after a major illness layoff.
It’s been three years now and the reigning US Open champion is still in the hunt of winning a Grand Slam title on the clay courts. She missed it by a whisker on two successive years but this time around, she is confident that she
can fight with the favourites and make a name for her in Paris.
Stosur told the AAP media representatives, “Its funny how things always change as months move on and you get certain results. Before I won the US Open of course I just said I'd love to win one grand slam. But now I'm not settling
for that. I've got one. Now I'd like to get two and you don't want to finish there."
She further added, “Ever since that semi-final run in '09 I've felt really comfortable on the courts and just really enjoyed playing here. It's got a great atmosphere and it just feels nice to be here. It's just more excitement
to play.”
World number six is struggling with her form at the moment and the return of the former world number one, Venus Williams, has made life difficult for her; losing two matches on two different occurrences to the American and not
able to reach the advanced stages of any major tournament.
Her best performance was witnessed in the Qatar Ladies Open, contested in Doha, where she reached the final of the tournament but the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, denied her of the first title of the season. The
tour of Charleston where she played the Family Circle Cup was also a success for her but again she failed to oust the likes of the American number one, Serena Williams, in the semis. So, the situation is tough but she is hopeful and that is all what matters
in the end.
