Samantha Stosur receives upset by Venus Williams –Western & Southern Open 2012
Former world number one, Venus Williams, rallied past the Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur, in the quarter-finals of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. Williams nailed her rival by 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4 in a two hours and 34-minute match on Friday.
William in an interview said, “It was probably for the best that I didn't win today, even though I wanted to win. But maybe my body was like telling me not to. I don't know. I felt really good going out there today, much better than my other two matches but it was a false alarm. She didn't do too much that threw me off. Her (Samantha Stosur) game is pretty straight forward and you know what to expect. She's getting a lot of balls back. She played really well today and I think she served more up the T than I expected.”
The American veteran secured the first serve in the initial set and captured opening three games to construct a 3-love advantage against her rival. The world number six Australian failed to bag away more than two points in the opening set. Williams attained a breakthrough; her scores transcended with every game, and eventually consolidated a 6-2 score.
The second set proved tougher encounter between the two, followed by a tie-breaker round with the surprising victory of the third seed Australian. Stosur managed to break Williams’ initial serve and secure 2-love lead and the scores kept on ticking evenly in the entire set, finishing in the tie-breaker. Stosur stepped forward as the winner in the decider, closing it with 7-6(2).
Ranked 64th in the ATP World Tour rankings, Williams gave the 28-year-old was unable to defend her previous win in the set. The American professional pulled off the third set with a 2-0 lead in the start. The Australian looked helpless against the might of the American veteran’s serves and Williams jolted her victory at 6-4 to reach the semis of the tournament.
Williams bombarded her competitor with exceptionally high aces in the match and nine double faults. She managed to pull off a moderate first serve percentage of 53 with a total of 38 of 56 first and 23 of 50 second delivery scores. The Australian fired one ace and committed double fault three times. She managed to pull off a decent first serve percentage of 62 percent, pocketing 38 of 64 first and 20 of 39 second reply points.
The 32-year-old Williams will be competing against the Chinese number one, Li Na in the semi-finals of the tournament.
