Samantha Stosur reclaims her fifth spot in the world rankings – Tennis News
Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, aimed at winning the Roland Garros French Open title this year but fell short of just two matches; losing out to the newly ranked world number 10, Sara Errani, in the semi-finals.
However, the early exit of the American number one, Serena Williamss and some outclass performance by Stosur has helped her to reclaim the fifth spot in the world rankings. She switched ranks with Serena in the new edition of the
world rankings issued by WTA (Women Tennis Association) on Monday.
Williams lost in the opening round of the French Open to the local French player, Virginie Razzano. It was the biggest upset of the tournament because the American was thought to be one of the strongest contenders to win the title
at Paris. However, it was not the case.
She started off the French Open campaign with a firm belief of defying all the odds and removing the tag of the one Slam wonder from her name. She stated, “It is funny how things always change as months move on and you get certain
results. Before I won the US Open of course I just said I'd love to win one grand slam. But now I'm not settling for that. I've got one. Now I'd like to get two and you don't want to finish there." However, her dreams were shattered by the in-form Italian
in the semi-finals who bounced back after witnessing a shocking second set loss to plonk the Aussie. Stosur lost 5-7, 6-1, 3-6.
It will be interesting to see how she starts her grass court season because if she manages to create a stronghold on this surface, she is in with a chance to win the title in Wimbledon and add another Grand Slam championship, apart
from the US Open wonder last year.
She is a not far from the fourth ranked Czech starlet as well in terms of points so a good grass court season can definitely boost her ranking further up and that will be a great achievement for someone who is already 28-year-old.
Grass court season is going to be another classic spell for the viewers.
