Samantha Stosur saves upset against Chanelle Scheepers in round three – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
World number five, Samantha Stosur, escaped an upset in the third round clash of the Sony Ericsson Open and registered 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 triumph. Her opponent, Chanelle Scheepers from South Africa, tried her best to knock her out but
failed to deliver in the third round battle.
However, the resistance from the 28-years-old South African lasted almost two hours and 18 minutes. She was happy at her efforts but wanted a better result that could have moved her one step ahead in the tournament. She started
off well with breakthrough to her name in the fifth game of the opening set.
Stosur was once again on the verge of another major upset; faulted miserably in the first set and lost two breakpoints that ended a commanding triumph for the 42nd ranked South African. However, her confidence never
shattered at all and she was ready to take the challenge of fighting back from a one set down stage.
Scheepers kept the pressure on with a breakpoint in the first game of the second set and reigned supreme over the Aussie starlet with a lead of 5-2 courtesy to another breakpoint in the seventh game. She was just a serve hold away
from another thumping triumph but the 27-years-old Aussie showed immense composure.
Stosur broke serve in a ‘do or die’ situation and then again in the 10th game to level the scores at 5-5. Spectators were extremely delighted to see such a magnificent turnaround in the proceedings at their disposal.
The Aussie contender kept on hammering her opponent and broke serve for the third time on the trot to bag a cracking encounter that was almost out of her hands few games ago. She was praised for her emphatic effort and suddenly
the set scores were tied at one apiece.
It was not long before the momentum swirled the match away from the South African. Scheepers went down two breakpoints early in the final set that gave an unassailable lead of 4-0 to the Aussie starlet. She kept the pressure on
and ended the match with another thumping breakthrough.
It was a massive turnaround especially for the Aussie professional who was struggling to make a mark in the tennis circuit. She will be up against the American giant, Serena Williams, who is eager to show her worth to the public
on her comeback.
It will be another enthralling battle if Stosur can stay fit and pull of another performance like this.
