Samantha Stosur says nothing to worry after the early loss at UNICEF Open – Tennis News
Australia’s best female tennis player at the moment, Samantha Stosur, has said that she is not worried after losing her opening match at the UNICEF Open.
Stosur was beaten by the world number 262, Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, in straight sets 6-7(7), 3-6 in the first round at the grass courts of s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.
The Australian will now have to enter the Wimbledon Championships with lack of practice, as this tournament was serving as a warm up event for the third Grand Slam of the season.
However, Stosur shared that she would not freak out after this surprise loss. She said, "I don't know what the secret recipe is for doing well at Wimbledon, so I'm not going to freak out at all. Of course I would have liked more
matches and that's why you play these lead-up tournaments, and tournaments in general, for confidence and for matches and all that.”
The Australian added, "But I'm not going to get down on myself. I played a pretty decent match and lost and that's all it is. I'll get enough practice in this week and probably play a few practice sets with other girls when I get
to London. I think I'll be fine."
Stosur had made a very good start to the contest, as she captured opening three games to race to a 3-0 lead but she allowed her opponent to get back into the match and capture it in straight sets.
The Australian gave a good performance at the French Open, where she reached the last four. She was surprised by the then world number 24, Sara Errani of Italy, in a three set thriller 7-5 1-6 6-3 in the semi-finals.
Stosur failed to give good performance in her nine previous appearances at the Wimbledon Championships. She could not even clear the opening round in her last two attempts at the All England Club. The Australian was knocked out
by Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, ranked 80th at that time, and the then world number 262, Malinda Czink of Hungary, at the 2010 and 2011 Wimbledon Championships respectively.
The Gold Coast, Australia resident rose to the top of the tennis world last year, when she defeated Serena Williams in straight sets 6-2 6-3 in the US Open final to lift her first Grand Slam trophy.
Stosur will now head straight to the practice courts of the All England Club to adjust her game to the grass of SW19.
