Samantha Stosur scraps away Irina Falconi to clear round two – French Open 2012
Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, registered her second win against the 112th ranked American, Irina Falconi, on Wednesday in the second round of the Roland Garros French Open. It was simple straight sets 6-1, 6-4
win for the sixth ranked Aussie superstar who has shown a lot of promise to threaten the top seeds this season.
First four games went by in a flash and Falconi was just able to win a single point in that time. She was completely ousted in all aspects of the sport and didn’t look to put forth any sort of resistance to the onslaught of the
Aussie.
However, she forced Stosur to dig deep and hold serve in the fifth game. Finally a hold to love for the Falconi entertained the crowd and a loud roar of sarcastic praise was heard at the arena. Stosur kept her focus on the play
and escaped scare of losing serve game to round off the opening set proceedings.
The second set was relatively competitive than the first. Both players held serves in the first four games before the Aussie starlet sneaked a breakthrough that gave her a lead. She consolidated her position with a serve hold and
kept her lead intact until the end of the set. Falconi was once close on breaking serve when she 30:15 up in the game but Stosur won the next three points to hold serve and register a thumping triumph.
In a post-match interview, Stosur said, “We've seemed to run into each other in the third rounds quite often, either at Grand Slams or at the other big tournaments. I've got to expect another tough one. Nadia can play great, she
can have a huge serve, and she's been at the top of the game before, so you have to be ready for her to be on."
Samantha Stosur will have a tough test in the following round when she gets on court against 27th seed Russian star, Nadia Petrova. She is expected to win the match but considering the form of the Russian in the tournament
any result is possible.
