Samantha Stosur self-assured of winning 2013 Australian Open crown – Tennis News
Former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, has been labouring extremely hard to remain in the top lot of WTA contenders. She has held firmly to the ninth spot in the WTA Premier Rankings by the end of the 2012 season and hopes of
having a cracking beginning to the upcoming year. The Aussie number one is determined to bag his second Major trophy and she believes the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament is a perfect opportunity to cash in the home conditions and reclaim glory.
"I've got as good a chance as any of the girls up there," Stosur cited. "I won the US Open last year, so why not? I know that I can compete and beat the best girls in the world, so I'd like to think it's possible."
It appears to be quite an ambitious statement on Stosur’s part, as she has been clearly struggling to show her class throughout the 2012 season. The Aussie veteran hasn’t won a single WTA championship title this year, reaching
the final rounds twice but failing to come out as the winner. She was the world number five at the 2012 Australian Open but has sunk four spots and is on the verge of crashing out of the elite Top-10 rankings. Stosur knows she had to go through some of the
most belligerent contenders at the Australian Open campaign, yet she is confident of posting a good performance at the grand stage of Melbourne Park next month.
"I think you've got to realize what happened and why and what you did wrong and what you can improve on to not make the same mistakes again this coming year," she said. "Last summer I just froze and played really tight tennis and
wasn't free. I was too passive and didn't do what I needed to do."
Stosur showed at 2011 US Open that she is capable of claiming a Grand Slam title. However, she is termed as a ‘One Slam Wonder’, since she couldn’t sustain her impetus in the Major tournaments to follow. The 28-year-old was ejected
in the opening round of this year’s Australian Open, falling to an inferior-ranked opponent, but she might turn out to be one of the hot favourite contenders for the mega event next month.
