Samantha Stosur stomps over Petra Martic to qualify for the second round – US Open 2012
Former world number four, Samantha Stosur crushed Croatian Petra Martic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at hard courts of the Flushing Meadows on Monday. The encounter between the two lasted for a total of 51 minutes.
Stosur told the media, "It was great to get out there again. I felt like I was ready to go. First match up, first day, it was a good start, so I certainly will not complain about being out there. It was nice to come back
to that court and play very well. It did pop into my head for a split second. I knew at 4-0, 40-0 that I had not missed a point, and it had been going quickly. But then I hit a double fault and it was erased, and I was quickly on with the next point."
The Aussie tennis ace took off the match with a serve hold and exhibited her brilliant game plan to secure the initial five games in the match, bringing the scores to 5-love. The 64th ranked Croatian
native gradually picked momentum but she seemed helpless in front of her rival’s serves. Stosur assertively proceeded forward and captured the set with her outstanding 6-1 score.
In the subsequent set, 21-year-old was unable to retain her first serve and continued with sloppy game play. This gave the Aussie professional a chance for an assertive start and she snatched a substantial lead. The world
number seven kept her focus and nudged up a 6-1 score, subsequently winning the match with a double breadstick.
The 28-year-old Aussie shelled her rival with 10 aces and double faulted once. However, she had an average first serve percentage of 69, converting 19 of 22 initial serves. She captured five of eight break points, whilst
Martic smashed three aces and double faulted twice in the entire matchup. She had a moderately better first serve percentage of 71, securing 18 of 37 points in the opening set.
The seven-seeded Aussie participant smashed four aces and had an average first serve percentage of 58, clinching seven of seven first serve points. She capitalized all seven break points that she encountered in the match.
On the other hand, Martic fired two aces and had a higher first serve percentage of 75, capturing 13 of 24 first serve points.
Stosur will have to face a tough competition at the hands of the third seeded Maria Sharapova in the second match.
