Samantha Stosur struggling to register a brighter 2013 season – Tennis News
Aussie number one, Samantha Stosur, would not be able to perform to the best of her abilities due to her ankle surgery a little before the Australian Open Grand Slam. She was unable to sustain her previous wins as she was suffering
from a tough recovery process.
In an interview, she informed the media, “There is no ideal time to do anything like that, but it had to be done and everything's gone well. But I haven't been able to do enough of what I wanted to do (in training). I will see
how it goes and I'm ready to go. It's only in the last week to ten days that it's pretty much normal.”
The 2011 US Open champion displayed a relatively weaker performance at the start of the last season while recovering from her injury. She was the top seeded challenger at the Brisbane International and faced an unexpected defeat
at the hands of the Czech contender Iveta Benesova. Failing to sustain her previous form, she lost in the first round of the Australian Open 2012 at the hands of the underdog, Sorana Cirstea. The Australian contender was the finalist at the Qatar Ladies Open
in Doha but in the final round, she was unable to rally beyond the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka.
The right-hander displayed a relatively average performance in the remaining tournaments. At the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, she lost in the semi-final at the hands of local veteran, Serena Williams. 28-year-old Stosur manifested
a relatively improved performance in the clay court season. She was amongst the top five seeds at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open but underwent an unexpected defeat at the hands of the Czech challenger, Lucie Hradecka.
She made it to semi-finals of the French Open but faced a three-set upset at the hands of the Italian number one, Sara Errani. As in the later part of the season, she was plagued with injury and she was unable to defend her title
at the US Open 2012. The Australian number one was unable to sustain her winning momentum but she is hopeful regarding her next adventure.
