Samantha Stosur stuns Vera Zvonareva with a bombshell attack in quarterfinal – US Open 2011
After a two day break, the Aussie (Stosur) continued her mastery over yet another top player at the US Open Womens’ singles quarter final. The two top seeds to take to the grandstand of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis
Center were the number 2 seed Vera Zvonareva against the number 9 seed Samantha Stosur. Conquering her eighth straight victory of 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday afternoon over Russian Zvonareva, Aussie Stosur booked a place in the semi final.
Stosur had only lost their first two career meetings back in 2004 and after that had beaten Zvonareva in their last seven meetings. Vera Zvonareva was given yet another chance to restore her dignity but unfortunately she unable
to avail it.
With her aggressive style looking razor-sharp, Stosur opened the first round of the set to 1-0. She then went on to breaking Zvonareva once in the first three games to take the lead at 3-0. It was a little too late for Zvonareva
to start hitting and winning on her serve. As the players won on their respective serves Zvonareva was still two breaks down in the eighth game. Stosur was now serving for the match, while Zvonareva was desperately looking to consolidate a break but Stosur’s
tremendous hard work paid off in the end, as she was able to hold her serve and clogged the opening set.
By the end of the first set Stosur was not even beaten once in the entire set and by accomplishing 5 more points than the Russian brass.
The second set was a few minutes longer than the first as Zvonareva tried her level best to stay in the set and the match. Serving first was Zvonareva and as she smashed two aces, she won the first game. Stosur also won on her
serve in the second game but in the third took the lead as she broke the Russian. The two kept winning on their serves in alternate games till the eighth game at which point Vera was still 2 breaks down. As Vera was serving to stay in the match Stosur sized
the first opportunity to break her for the last time in the ninth game. Restricting her Russian adversary to only three games Stosur won a quick 31 minute set.
Hitting 25 winners to 17 unforced errors, the 9th seeded Australian eased past the number 2 seeded Russian on the Grandstand court in just one hour and seven minutes into the semi final. She will now be facing the German
surprise, Angelique Kerber.
