Samantha Stosur thrashes Chanelle Scheepers in the quarterfinal – HP Japan Open 2011
Top seeded Australian Samantha Stosur thrashed the seventh seeded South African Chanelle Scheepers in the quarterfinal of the HP Japan Open 2011. The two competitors took up swords on the outdoor hard courts of the Utsubo Tennis
Center in Osaka, Japan. After a thrilling one hour and nineteen minutes the top seeded Aussie got rid of the seventh seeded South African in straight sets of 6-2,6-3 on Saturday the 15th of October 2011.
Inaugurating the initial round of the match was the number one seed and she bagged the first game without much opposition to successfully place herself on the scoreboard at 1-0. Following in her footsteps was the seventh seeded
South African, who too held her serve and placed herself beside Stosur on the scoreboard at 1-1.
The two won on alternate serves and the scoreboard had tied at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game. It was in the fifth and the sixth game that Stosur took the lead by a break and a hold of serve. She repeated the feat in the last
two games and took the competitive edge by bagging a 6-2 victory of the opening set.
Out of the eight games played in the opening set, Scheepers was only able to bag two games as she did not utilize the only breakpoint chance that she received.
The second set was again initiated by Stosur and she once again had a great start as she not only held her serve but capitalized on an early break in the second game to lead the scoreboard with a 2-0 score. She further increased
the gap with a hold of serve in the third game.
It was in the fourth game that Scheepers actually won a game on her serve and reduced the deficit to 1-3. However, in the fifth game Stosur again won a game and brought the score to 4-1 on the scoreboard. In the following two games
the players again won a service game each and the scoreboard had moved to a 5-2. Although, Stosur was unable to force an error out of her adversary in the eighth game, she managed to successfully bag the match point on her serve and sealed her victory.
The top seeded Aussie will now be facing either the Czech Petra Cetkovska or Chinese Jie Zheng in the semi-final of the event.
