Samantha Stosur to lead Australia’s team in the Fed Cup tie against Germany – Tennis News
World number five, Samantha Stosur, will be leading her country against the strong German squad in the Federation Cup tie. All matches will take place on clay courts in Stuttgart. The German team consists of three players that
are amongst the Top-16 players of the world; world number 11, Andrea Petkovic, world number 14, Angelique Kerber, and the gorgeous tennis icon, Julia Goerges, who is ranked 16th in the world.
Petkovic will be making a comeback after three months having stayed out of action due to a back stress fracture. Kerber is the one who is in sublime run of form having won a couple of titles already in Paris and Copenhagen. In
the latter title triumph, the German outfoxed the defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki, at her home soil. It shows that she is on top of her game and one of the biggest threats to the Aussie squad.
Goerges is also ruling the world having closed on to her career-high ranking of world number 15. She made it to the final of the Dubai Duty Free Championship but couldn’t hold the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, from taking
the crown.
The team of Stosur is pretty weak compared to the German. Jarmila Gajdosova is the one who is capable of pulling up major upsets having seen her do that twice in 2012 already. It is a case for ‘nothing to lose’ and sometimes it
works in favour of the underdogs who play without any pressure. However, the class is permanent and the team of Germany has immense depth to recover from any early blows as well.
In an interview, Australia's Federation Cup captain, Dave Taylor said, “It would be the biggest win of this current team, no doubt. It would be a magnificent win. Overall things are going quite well and I am pretty happy with the
way the year has turned out with the obvious exclusion of January.”
Talking about Gajdosova, he stated, “If Jarka can put a point on the board that would be an unexpected bonus for us. She is definitely capable of that happening but it is not really something that we can count on."
Seeing the slump in the form of the reigning US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, it will be difficult for the Aussie squad if she fails to discover her supreme run of form. She has already lost five out of six matches against the
Top-20 players, this year, and if this phenomenon continues, she will disappoint her home fans further.
