Samantha Stosur to play in the Apia Sydney International 2013 – Tennis News
Apia Sydney International has cashed in its resources to lure the local number one player, Samantha Stosur, in playing the tournament despite her contract with the Brisbane International tournament that ends on the day when the
Apia Sydney International commences. It will be a very hectic start to the season for the ninth ranked Aussie superstar who will have to continuously play tennis until the start of the year’s first Grand Slam Championship, the Australian Open.
The Apia Sydney International will begin on the 6th of January and last until the 12th at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre. Stosur was lured to play the tournament because it’s an internationally recognized
event and most of the big guns are participating in that. The likes of the seventh ranked Chinese star, Li Na, and the 10th ranked Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark has already confirmed their participation and tournament officials are convinced that
they will be able to attract at least two more Top-10 players if not more.
Stosur commented about Apia Sydney International, "Every year the tournament is tough, the cut off is around 25 in the world so you really jump straight in the deep end there. Going into the first Grand Slam of the year you want
to be playing the best in the world and that always happens in Sydney." She further added, "There are lots of friends and family that come out and support me and it just feels like home. What better way to get ready for the Australian Open than Sydney." Tournament
Director, Craig Watson stated, "The Apia International Sydney is renowned for the strength of its women’s field and Sam’s commitment to playing Sydney confirms that. I fully expect that trend to continue again this year."
The 28-year-old Aussie registered a respectable season in 2012; couldn’t win any title but still managed to stay amongst the elite category of Top-10 players which is itself an achievement. The highlights of the 2012 season include
two final appearances; one in the Qatar Ladies Open and the second one in the Kremlin Cup at Moscow. She needs a strong start for the 2013 season to continue her progress towards the Top-5 category.
