Samantha Stosur undoes Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in straight sets at the 2011 Family Circle Cup
Australian tennis player and second seed Samantha Stosur prevailed over Austrian pro Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in her opening match at this year’s Family Circle Cup. The Australian number one took less
than an hour to send Mayr-Achleitner home to proceed to the third round of the tournament.
Samantha Stosur hails from Brisbane in Australia, and currently lives on the Gold Coast. She is ranked World Number 5 at the moment, and is 27 years old. The player has been a tennis pro for over ten years now, having joined the
Women’s Tennis Association in 1999. However, despite her tenure on the WTA, she first came to fame just a couple of years ago. Her best performance to date was her title match appearance against eventual champion Francesca Schiavone at the 2010 French Open.
The player has won a total of two WTA career titles.
Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, meanwhile, is ranked much lower than Stosur at World Number 108. She is also three years younger at 24, and has not spent much time on the WTA pro circuit. The player is right-handed and has yet to win
a single WTA title. This is the first on-court meeting between Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Samantha Stosur.
The Australian player played a remarkable match, and did not allow her opponent any opportunity to take over the contest. She scored a total of eight aces and committed just four double faults throughout her meeting with Mayr-Achleitner.
She did not face a single break point during the match, although she successfully converted all four of her break point opportunities and broke Mayr-Achleitner repeatedly to cement her stranglehold on the match. Samantha “Sam” Stosur concluded the match with
a total of 63 per cent of the points played, and set up a winning scoreline of 6-1, 6-2.
While Patricia Mayr-Achleitner packs up at the 2011 Family Circle Cup, second seed Samantha Stosur will move on to the third round of the tournament to compete against either Elena Vesnina of Russia, or fourteenth seed Bethanie
Mattek-Sands of USA.
