The fifth day of the WTA Championships 2011 initiates the semi finals. Two best players from the White Group will contest against the two best players of the opposing Red Group and the winner from each will battle for the most
prestigious title of the season end Championships in the final.
The first two players to compete for a spot in the final are; the current US Open champion Samantha Stosur from the White Group and the current Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova from the Red Group. The players are set to battle
each other on the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday the 29th of October 2011.
The two competitors have competed twice against each other in their professional career and are acquainted with each other’s style. The two met for the first time back in 2008 at the French Open and Kvitova had ousted Stosur in
straight sets to take the lead in the head-to-head series. The last time the two faced each other was this year at the Australian Open and once again Kvitova got the best of Samantha Stosur in straight sets to further increase her head-to-head lead to 2-0.
Aussie Stosur had qualified for the year-end Championships for the first time in 2010 and even though she was a debutante, she managed to reach the semi finals by defeating two top players but her stardom was put to an end by Kim
Clijsters.
Nevertheless, at the Championships this year, she expertly defeated Maria Sharapova in her first round robin match but lost to Victoria Azarenka in the second round robin match. However, in her third rubber she destroyed current
French Open titlist Li Na to reserve a spot in the semi finals.
Stosur is an experienced player and has managed to prove her mettle against many a top players but she surprised everyone when she thrashed Serena Williams in straight two sets during the title match at the US Open 2011.
On the other hand, the Wimbledon Champion Kvitova too has upgraded her techniques, skills and her performance. She not only managed to bag a title earlier this year at Brisbane but was also accomplished a Grand Slam and further
progressed to add four more titles to her haul.
This is her maiden performance at the WTA Championships and has skilfully managed to win all the three Round Robin matches by conquering the reigning world number one Caroline Wozniacki, then Vera Zvonareva, and also Agnieszka
Radwanska to land a spot in the semi final.
Although, many tennis doyens, tennis virtuosos, and connoisseurs believe Kvitova will overpower seventh seeded Australian Stosur in straight sets. Many tennis experts and pundits also believe that Stosur might bring a Serena taming
form in order to reserve a spot in the final.
