Samantha Stosur vs. Serena Williams; the US Open final rematch – Tennis News
Finally, the stage is set for the former world number one, Serena Williams, to avenge her humiliating defeat at the US Open final from the Aussie tennis ace, Samantha Stosur. The two top-class athletes will lock horns in the fourth
round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Monday evening, with the winner of the contest getting a place in the quarter-finals of the mega event.
The highly anticipated contest will be played on the outdoor hard courts of Miami, Florida. The local crowd will be out there to fully support their hot favourite tennis icon, Serena, who is making a comeback at Miami after an
injury layoff. Seeded at number 10 in the main draw, the American has been phenomenal on her return to the tennis courts and is bidding to bag the championship title on her home soil.
Serena got a bye to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open and had no trouble in dumping the Chinese wildcard entrant, Shuai Zhang, in straight sets. She then outmuscled the 21st seed Italian veteran, Roberta Vinci,
in the next battle to book a date with the sixth seeded Australian, who cost her US Open championship. Currently holding the sixth spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Stosur is straining extremely hard to get back her vintage form since the last few
months. The Aussie tennis icon has not been up to the mark in most of the tournaments she played and has a 11-6 winning ration for the 2012 season.
Serena leads 4-3 in the all-time head-to-head series against Stosur but had suffered two out of three losses at the hands of the Aussie in the last WTA season. The American outmuscled Stosur in the final at Toronto last year but
was beaten by the class of the Australian veteran in the WTA Premier-level event in Cincinnati.
The most recent battle between these two was played at the elite stage of the US Open in New York last year. Serena was deemed to be the favourite for winning the Grand Slam title against Stosur, who was playing her first Major
final. The 27-year-old Australian beat all the odds to register a 6-2, 6-3, win over the multiple-time former Grand Slam champion, Serena to lift the coveted US Open trophy.
Serena was extremely agonised at her defeat in the final of a Grand Slam event on her home soil and has been ever-hungry to avenge Stosur. The Miami Masters fourth round is a perfect chance for the American legend to take down
the out-of-form Australian and stamp her authority over the game.
