Samantha Stosur working hard for an impactful summer – Tennis News
Current world number six, Australia’s Samantha Stosur, is training extremely hard and is focusing on her physical fitness these days to bag plenty more championship titles in the coming WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season.
The 27-year-old Aussie veteran has been undertaking two arduous fitness and weight sessions each day for the past two weeks to get her in proper shape for the upcoming Olympic year. Stosur goes through gruelling fitness workouts six out of seven days a week as a critical plank in her preparations for the 2012 WTA season.
Stosur recently bagged her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open after stunning the hot favourite and former champion, Serena Williams, in the final at New York. The Aussie believes her Major title victory was a fruit of her hard physical sessions she has been taking before her US Open campaign and she desires to carry out her fitness in the following season as well.
“My exercise program started with a 20 minute walk every other day and keeping my heart rate under 120,'' she wrote in a blog post, “It was actually really difficult because I felt like of course I should be able to do that and it shouldn't be that hard, but having my heart rate monitor on and looking at my heart rate go through the roof after that, I guess, it really made me realise how far gone and how far down I'd got.”
Australia’s number one was struck down by Lyme disease in early 2008 but laboured extremely hard on her fitness to make a comeback to professional tennis world shortly afterwards. Her voyage in the Grand Slams proved fruitful this season at the hard courts of New York when she lifted the glorious US Open trophy but Stosur cited it was only the beginning.
The Aussie is preparing for back-to-back tournaments on her home ground in Sydney and then the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, next month. Stosur has never gone past the fourth round at the Grand Slam Down Under but her US Open victory has provided another layer to her confidence for next season’s campaign.
Stosur revealed that she has targeted three names, whom she has never defeated before, for the next year. Second ranked Petra Kvitova, world number three Victoria Azarenka and former world number one, Kim Clijsters, are on the hit-list of Stosur for the coming season.
