Samardo Samuels and Glen Davis show their frustration on union’s decision: NBA News
Monday was the day when National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) made the most critical decision which can eventually hurt NBA in the worst way possible. The players association not only decided to reject owner’s ultimate revised offer, the union also concluded the afternoon, declaring decertification in pursuit of filing antitrust lawsuits against the league.
There is no second opinion that majority of the representatives of the players association, who were present at the union’s meeting in New York on Monday, were in the favour of taking the matter to the doors of the court. However, the decision was definitely not of all of the NBA players whose votes were not given the due credit.
That is why, a day after the announcement from the players association of dissolving the union, not only a number reports argued that the poling of the players would have given a different result of the meeting, few players also revealed their frustration as 50 odd players took the future of all in their hands.
Cleveland Cavaliers young power forward Samardo Samuels and Boston Celtics big man Glen Davis are among the players who have recently aired their sentiments that they never wanted the labour dispute to go that far.
The 22-year-old Samardo Samuels, who has played only 37 games so far in his short NBA career, declared that he would have voted to accept NBA owner’s latest proposal to get the action back on the court. Samuels stated that players like him, who have just joined the league, have families and responsibilities to take care of and want to resume work.
"A lot of people in the league are panicking. You're talking about missing pay-checks. Those pay-checks you're missing are going to add up and guys have families and responsibilities and bills to pay. I'm just a guy that's coming out of college.."
Samardo Samuels further mentioned players like Boston Celtics veteran Paul Pierce, who were the frontrunners in disbanding the union, and argued that he don’t have a huge amount of money saved up like them.
"It's easy for Paul Pierce to say that. You've been in the league how long. You've got a decent amount of money saved up, but what about the guys just coming into the league.”
Glen Davis, who is nicknamed as Big Baby, also supported the same argument and questioned the representatives of the union that does the decision made by the them represents all of the players or for those who have already made a lot of money.
"Are they making that decision for the rest of us? Or are they just making that decision for the Kobes of this league — guys who have made a lot of money already." Davis said.
For young players like Samuels and Davis, decertification is definitely a big concern and if the decision prolongs the procedure even further as the lockout has already completed four months of its existence.
