Sameer Verma eyes bigger targets after wonderful display at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships
Indian talented junior shuttler, Sameer Verma, has set high targets for himself in the future, after delivering a stunning performance at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2011. The Indian lost the Boy’s Singles final to Malaysia’s Zulfadli Zulkifli
in a well fought straight-set match. Now, he is eyeing to perform well in the World Badminton Junior Championships.
Sameer, who is the younger brother of Sourabh Verma, quarter-finalist of the India Open Super Series 2011, delivered a superb performance in the team-event and individual matches.  He won eight fights before losing in the final of the Asia Junior Championships.
The 17-year-old Sameer clinched all of his matches in the team events and assisted his squad to surge into the top four. His superb play has made his presence felt at the national and international level and he has set his goal to perform well in the World
Junior Championships.
While talking about his display in the final of the Asia Junior Championship, Sameer said, “I was nervous in the final. Nobody expected me to reach that far so it put extra pressure on me. I could have beaten him but his net play was quite good. Despite
trying hard, I failed to counter his dribbles at the net.”
Throughout the event, he delivered an incredible performance as he crushed many top-seeded shuttlers in the team-event and individual encounters. However, he failed to continue his impressive run against the Malaysian, who played a little better in the final
encounter.
Sameer said, “When I realized he is unbeatable at the net, I tried to play to my strength which is involving the opponent in the rallies. I won most of the points when I involved him in the rallies. He then adopted time-wasting strategy after the end of
each rally which broke my rhythm.”
The young and talented Indian certainly needs experience to deal with such situations, which will come in the due course of time by playing more and more international events. He is currently training in Hyderabad at the academy of Pullela Gopichand, a former
champion of the All England Open.
