Samitar seals maiden Classic victory for Mick Channon
Mick Channon surprisingly added the first Classic victory to his career chart on Sunday, May 27 when Samitar clinched top spot in the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas that took place at Curragh racecourse.
The three-year-old talented bay filly ran under Martin Harley to beat seven worthy competitors in the Group 1 contest.
On the good course of 1 mile, the winner confidently competed against Ishvana, Princess Sinead, Homecoming Queen, After, La Collina, Yellow Rosebud and Janey Muddles.
Channon, a former English footballer who started his career as a trainer in 1990, was glad at Samitar’s outstanding performance.
He said, “I'm delighted she's found her form. She didn't run badly in France, but she made the running and she should have been held up. It was my fault for running her in a sales race at Newmarket before that - I was trying to be clever dropping her back
to six furlongs.”
The veteran trainer added, “She needed some decent ground and she's got it now. I kept saying she's a good filly and it is hard for people to keep believing in you when things go wrong.”
Channon has a number of epic feats to his name. He has trained many title holders so far. He only lacked in Classic victory that came yesterday. Now, he seems to be quite satisfied with the efforts he has put in this field to date.
Samitar also hiked her confidence level to a great extent by winning the Guineas. Overall, the brilliant daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar out of Aileen’s Gift has 3 triumphs to her credit. She has run for 9 times since debuting in May 2011.
Interestingly, the fantastic filly started her career on May 27 and accomplished a remarkable milestone on the same day right after a year.
Among the winner’s competitors, Ishvana grabbed the runner-up rank while Princess Sinead finished third on the podium.
The hot favourite runner, Homecoming Queen, claimed 4th position followed by After who stood 5th.
La Collina clinched 6th spot while Yellow Rosebud and Janey Muddles finished 7th and 8th respectively.
According to Channon, Samitar will next run in the Coronations Stakes to bring home another ace title.
