The former East Germany midfielder suggests that the current national side cannot be identified by their game play but still wants them to register a win at a big tournament soon.
Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer believes that the national team does not have true football characteristics and are short of an original footballing philosophy. Germany have been unable to win any major honours
since the European Championships of 1996.
The 1996 European player of the year does not see Die Mannschaft adopting a specific strategy to tackle with their rivals and wants Germany to follow the footsteps of Spain and Italy.
Sammer wants Germany to adopt a footballing identity that works with their system and strengths. The only thing working for the Germans is their development of talented youth players who are doing exceptionally well for club and
country. He claimed that Spain, Italy and other nations have a footballing philosophy and they always play by it.
"Do Germany actually have a footballing identity at the moment? Apart from saying we’ve got some good lads coming through? I don't see one. You can define http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 and some other nations, but I'm having problems with Germany.
What do we stand for?” Sammer stated.
The 44-year-old expressed that Germany are in a state of confusion at the moment, and even though with the emergence of bright prospects, they are still struggling with a winning mentality.
"At the moment it's for good young players, but overall, we could restart work on our footballing identity,” he mused.
The Bayern official declared that the team is progressing well and always fighting for the top crown but has been unable to take the final step forward and win a trophy. He admitted that hard work is needed in order for them to
challenge for major titles.
"I think we're heading in a very good direction, but we still need the courage to keep working on what it means. With the exception of youth teams, it's a while since we’ve won an international trophy," he concluded.
