Former Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Strunz believes Sammer will have to bring the Bavarian giants back to the top if he wants his spell to be considered a success.
Borussia Dortmund edged out Bayern to clinch the Bundesliga title. The Munich giants were also beaten by the Black Yellows in the final of DFB Pokal. As soon the talks ended, the club released a statement announcing the end of Christian Nerlinger’s reign as the sporting director. The former Die Roten midfielder was sacked after two years of his appointment.
Bayern supremo Hoeness lined-up Matthias Sammer to replace the outgoing director. Prior to joining the Bavarian giants Sammer was the DFB eleven’s technical director, he was working in that role since 2006.

The former midfielder believes that Sammer’s primary goal should be to overtake Borussia Dortmund and secure the Bundesliga title which his predecessor Christian Nerlinger was able to do. He considers the former Stuttgart manager has a tough task at hand.
“The goal is to leapfrog Borussia Dortmund again [as Germany's dominant team], and Christian Nerlinger failed to do that. Sammer will have the same difficult task at hand,” he added.
Strunz piles further pressure on the newly appointed sporting director, as he thinks that Bundesliga table at the end of the season will tell whether Sammer’s been successful or not.
"In the end, Sammer's success will be measured by Bayern's position in the table when the season is over. You're always judged on the amount of titles you win at this club," he further added.
The newly appointed sporting director will be under immense pressure to achieve as he himself promised he will bring immediate success to the club.
