Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds denied entry into Baseball Hall of Fame – MLB News
It looks like the players from the so called ‘steroid era’ will not be admitted this year to the Baseball Hall of Fame as none of the players was able to get the 75 percent of votes needed.
Most fans are not surprised as all the rumours and allegations for the past few years had shown some serious steroids use within Major League Baseball. The major point of contention in most people’s minds is if the steroids are the reason for these player’s
tremendous performances. It becomes difficult to ascertain the difference between talent and cheating. It is ironic that some of the players have never had any real evidence come up, except for some witnesses or rumours.
However, other players were also not inducted. Mike Piazza, Curt Schilling, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Lee Smith and Jack Morris all failed to get the 75 percent required for induction. In four decades, this is only the second time that none of the players
got in to the Hall of Fame.
Some of the players made comments as this is a very disappointing scene to happen to any former player, especially players with such outstanding performances.
''Curt Schilling made a good point, everyone was guilty. Either you used PEDs, or you did nothing to stop their use,'' Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said to The Associated Press.
It will be interesting to see the fallout of this with the fans and other players. The fact that these players put in tremendous performance night after night for many years is no laughing matter. The way Major League Baseball decides to handle this situation
will be watched carefully. Having players with such high numbers and personal awards not making it to the Hall of Fame can create a lot of controversy. Then again, allowing these players in to the Hall of Fame can also create a mess for MLB as well.
''I'm kind of glad that nobody got in this year,'' Hall of Famer Al Kaline said. ''I feel honored to be in the Hall of Fame. And I would've felt a little uneasy sitting up there on the stage, listening to some of these new guys talk about how great they
were. ... I don't know how great some of these players up for election would've been without drugs. But to me, it's cheating.''
It looks like the baseball writers agree with Kaline as they refused players like Bonds, Clemens and Sosa a place in the coveted Baseball Hall of Fame.
