Sammy backs http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Test as well – Cricket News Update
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382 has backed mystery spinner Sunil Narine to continue being their wrecker in chief in the Test series against New Zealand, starting at North Sound, Antigua, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
"[On] the type of wickets we play on in the Caribbean, spin plays an important role," said Sammy while speaking to media persons after a practice session ahead of the Test series opener in Antigua.
"We have a world-class spinner in Narine, who proved that throughout the one-day and T20 competition that he's a handful here in the Caribbean. It's a different ball and batsmen don't have to attack him, but I back him to go out there and do well for us," he added further.
Narine, the 24-year-old right-arm off-spinner from Trinidad finished as the leading wicketkeeper in both the T20 and One Day International series against the Kiwis. He claimed 13 wickets from five matches in the five-ODI series, at an average of 11.23 and an impressive economy rate of 2.92, to set a platform for the 4-1 series win for the hosts. In the two T20 internationals, the Trinidadian picked up seven wickets at a startling average of 6.57 and an economy rate of 5.75.
The off-spinner made his international debut for the Windies in December last year, with a One Day International against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, during which he troubled the formidable Australian bating line-up with his ability to move the ball both the ways. Though the series was drawn 2-2, Narine topped the series wickets chart with 11 scalps in his name, at 14.45.
Though Narine struggled in his lone Test appearance against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 last month, Sammy is confident the Trinidadian would prove to be unplayable in the Caribbean conditions.
The Windies have won the T20 and ODI leg of the itinerary quite comprehensively and the St Lucia all-rounder is hopeful his side would emulate those match-winning performances in the Test series as well.
“The entire team is looking forward to the Test series and hopefully we can continue the form we showed in the T20 and one-day series,” said Sammy, who is yet to win a Test series against a Top level opposition.
