Samoa international George Pisi has penned deal with Northampton Saints: English Premiership - Rugby
It has been officially announced today that George Pisi of Samoa will be playing for Northhampton Saints after he accepted a new contract from the English Premiership side.
George Pisi is a 24-year-old Samoan rugby union player who plays as fullback and center for Blues in the Super 14 tournament. Pisi started his rugby career with his provincial club, North Harbor in 2005. He scored 50 points for the club and earned 50 caps.
His brother, Tusi Pisi, who is two years older, joined in with him. George Pisi played for North Harbor till 2009 and then moved to Taranaki in 2010 for the ITM Cup.
Alongside his provincial career, he was offered by a Super Rugby side Blues in 2006, which he accepted and played there till 2010. He has won sixteen caps for Blues, where he played as a fullback and did not score. He made his debut for his national team
in the Pacific Nations Cup in 2010 as he tallied three caps in the tournament.
He is presently playing for Clermont, a French Top 14 side. Pisi has also played against international teams like Scotland, England and Ireland and is eager to play for the Saints in the most reputed championship in rugby. He will be playing alongside stars
like Ben Foden and Chris Ashton in the backline.
Pisi seems content and happy about this development. He said, “Playing in front of Ben Foden and Chris Ashton last year was brilliant and it'll be amazing to get an opportunity to play with them.”
Jim Mallinder, the Saints director of rugby admitted that he is impressed by Pisi’s skills and was attracted towards his style of playing rugby. He said, “George has improved a lot over the past year or so and we were impressed with what we've seen of him
playing for Samoa in the autumn and Taranaki in the ITM Cup.”
Mallinder believes that Pisi is an extremely strong runner with the ball and also likes to play around the field a bit. The director not only wants him to play at center and fullback, but also would like to try him at different positions to explore his talent.
It has been shown in the past that Pisi has been at ease at any position and only focuses on giving output for his side without looking at personal goals or total. This selfless quality maybe his biggest asset to any team.
