  1. This applies for PCs using Windows..

When you install an internal HDD you need to make sure that you

    1. Power off the PC and disconnect power cord from wall (allows full discharge - 10 seconds or so).

    2. Connect the HDD, make sure the cables are secure. If the HDD is SATA (newer), the cables will only go on in one direction. If the HDD is EIDE (older), the data cable could get reversed - double check.

Assuming everything went well up to this point. The next step:

    3. Confirm that the motherboard can see the new HDD in CMOS. Refer to your motherboard manual or online PDF manual at the manufacturer's website for the specifics.

    4. Partition your HDD then format. Here is the step by step for Windows XP http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorial...

    Vista is similar: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows...

Once you have successfully formatted your HDD you can begin using it for storage.

When the time comes to convert the internal HDD to an external HDD, all you really need to is buy a drive enclosure. You'll need to know what type of drive it is (SATA, EIDE, etc.) so you can buy the correct enclosure. Then you'll remove the drive (power off / disconnected) and install in the enclosure. Chances are it'll then connect via the USB to your laptop. All you'll have to do then is plug it in and your laptop should set it up for use in the operating system.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  2. If you attached hdd in PC, you have to insert bootable cd in CD Rom and proceed through instructions. ;ll be able to make your hdd working/
