Samsung SF 360 fax machine connection problem?

I have a Samsung SF 360 fax for work purposes. It is connected through an adsl filter on 1 of 3 parrallel phone sockets with BT broadband also on the system. It is set to auto with 5 rings but will not recieve faxes but does interfere with incoming calls , giving a fax 'screech' . There is also 1 dect phone with answer machine facility (switched off ) and one remote phone.

Any ideas on what I may have done wrong .

The answering machine is probably picking up just before the fax does.  You can't have a fax and an answering machine on the same line - they'll both answer, and the fax will beep (that's how it lets the calling fax machine know that a fax machine answered) until it times out - then hang up.  Meanwhile, the answering machine will start blabbing, keeping the calling fax from realizing that a fax machine answered.

Choose one or the other.  I manually answer the line when I'm expecting a fax - I don't accept unsolicited fax calls.  (It not only lets me run an answering machine on the same line, it cuts down on the spam.)
