Samsung joins hands with NVF in volleyball development – Volleyball Nigeria
One of the largest electronics companies in the world, Samsung, joins hands with Nigerian Volleyball Federation (NVF) for the promotion of volleyball with in the country. The NVF recently organised a double-gender Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Jabi
Lake Beach Volleyball Arena in Abuja, which was generously sponsored by Samsung Electronics West Africa.  Following the success of the event and the good response of people, the sponsors have further affirmed the support for the growth and development of indoor
and beach volleyball in Nigeria.
Around 36 states of Nigeria sent aspiring athletes in the competition in Abuja. In the men’s section, 17 tandems showed up, while women’s tournament was attended by 15 duos. The volleyball enthusiasts got to see some great volleyball action on the sand,
while athletes cashed the opportunity to showcase their skills on the centre court. At the same time, the Nigerian Volleyball Federation got the chance to discover more talent on this side. The event turned out to be a great success, with winners and all other
participants taking home wonderful prizes.
The teams of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) dominated in both gender categories and settled for the top positions. NIS men performed exquisitely well and paved their way to the final showdown of the tournament, where they were joined by Benue. The
former proved to be better and overpowered Benue in the final match and secured top slot. Likewise, teams of Gombe and Niger fought for third position. Victory graced Gombe as they displayed better performance.
On the other hand, NIS women left everyone behind in the competition and got hold of the title trophy. They defeated conventional rival Benue in the final encounter, whereas Adamawa State team finished third after beating Kaduna.
The President of Nigerian Volleyball Federation, Habu Gumel, gave positive remarks about the interest of sponsors in volleyball development. He hoped that it will provide a great lift to less appreciated sport like volleyball in the region. He further added:
“The Nigerian Volleyball Federation will not allow this kind gesture by Samsung in identifying with volleyball in the country to be in vain. We will, in our own small way, reciprocate by monitoring talents discovered at this championship to the professional
stage.”
Meanwhile, the Samsung Head of Corporate Marketing, Donald Etim, said: “The partnership would change the focus of the game and make it more attractive for Nigerians to appreciate.”
The support of Samsung is really a good omen for volleyball development in the region. The NVF truly needed a supporter, who could give them the financial hold-up in setting volleyball events for young crop of players in Nigeria. The process has begun and
the first venture of Samsung and NVF has proved to be successful.
