The talismanic striker of Inter Milan, Samuel Eto’o, has been named African Player of the Year for a record fourth time at the CAF Awards in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Egypt-c2890 last night.
Chelsea and Cote d’Ivoire striker Didier Drogba, Sunderland and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905 attacker Asamoah Gyan and Inter Milan and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o; all these three players were short listed for the most prestigious football award in Africa. However, Didier Drogba
and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Asamoah-Gyan-c6791 failed to get as many votes as Eto’o won the award the award with huge margin.
Didier Drogba, who was the top goal scorer in Barclays Premier League with 29 goals to his credit in last season, won the African player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. And Drogba would have made it a hat-trick of CAF awards had he won it again this time around.
On the other hand, Asamoah Gyan, who was featuring in Rennes in Ligue1 last season and he is now playing Premier League outfit Sunderland, would have won this prestigious award for the first time.
Samuel’s exceptional performance in the whole last season overshadowed Gyan’s fantastic FIFA World Cup campaign with Ghana and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786. Moreover, the Cameroonian captain has won this award three times in a row
between 2003 and 2005.
However, Asamoah Gyan of Ghana came second in the award votes and Didier Drogba ended up being third in the voting.
Votes from the respective senior national teams' Head Coaches or Technical Directors of the 53 National Associations affiliated to CAF decided that Samuel Eto’o was the most deserving of the three players.
Despite http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cameroon-c2865’s unexpected failure at the latest World Cup where the Indomitable Lions were the first team to crash out of the tournament, Samuel Eto’o scored twice for his country and it was at the club level where he truly turned on the style.
The 29-year-old was the most vital part of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan squad which dominated the whole Europe. Samuel Eto’o won Serie A title, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana and UEFA Champions League last season while playing with Inter Milan.
