Samuel Pizzetti upsets Gustav Aaberg Lejdstroem in Men’s 400m freestyle – FINA Swimming World Cup
Italian swimmer, Samuel Pizzetti upset Gustav Aaberg Lejdstroem of Sweden in the Men’s 400m freestyle playoff on day one of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Swimming World Cup series. The competition is taking place at the first stop
of 2011 FINA/ARENA World Cup series in Dubai, while the session ended on Friday, October 7.
The 25-year-old Pizzetti ended his sixteen-lap freestyle swim on a high note, where he clocked a time of 3 minutes and 45.45 seconds for the gold medal. His title winning effort was nearly thirteen seconds behind the world record of 3 minutes and 32.77 seconds,
set by Paul Biedermann of Germany in 2009.
Pizzetti’s astonishing swim in the qualifying rounds of the event made him prominent for the top finish in the final race. Nevertheless, the Italian easily overwhelmed the efforts of his challengers, who were eyeing to give him a tough time in the final
meet. His splendid efforts spread over the distant freestyle discipline crushed the hopes of his competitors and he sprinted towards the finishing end as the top fastest swimmer.
He remained dominant over his competitors in the whole race, keeping them at a considerable distance for gold medal. With his heart winning efforts, he remained 1.83 seconds ahead of his strongest rival, Aaberg Lejdstroem, who occupied silver medal of the
event with a 3 minutes and 47.28 seconds effort.
The Swedish swimmer was followed by Sergii Frolov of Ukraine, who entered the final with a second finest time, but became helpless before the dominating efforts of Aaberg Lejdstroem. Frolov remained 0.54 seconds slower than his former finisher and stepped
on the podium for bronze medal. He hit the wall with a wonderful effort of 3 minutes and 47.82 seconds.
Pizzetti was ecstatic after his title win in the 400m event. Furthermore, spectators enjoyed the gruelling efforts of international athletes in the first of seven stages of the World Cup series, whereas, podium finishers were called upon the victory stand
to receive their medals and prizes.
