Is the samurai sword a good home defense weapon?

How much does it cost? I don't need an authentic one.

Would a softball bat be just as effective and much cheaper?

  1. This is very effective and it's cheap.

Make sure that gun doesn't blow your brains out Kitana.

  2. without training you are as likely to hurt yourself with a bladed weapon as you are anyone else.

You can get a decent machete for the price of a bad sword, and these are easier to control and need less room to swing.

  3. unless you have been trained with it chances are you will hurt yourself with it.

  4. Unless your willing to spend a few hundred to a thousand dollars. The samurai swords that you can buy are just for looks. They are cheaply made and wouldn't survive one good strike. The best self defense weapon is a .357 revolver with proper training on how to use it. A good can of mace would work also.

  5. Might be a bit too long if you have narrow hallways and a sharp weapon isn't good to keep lying around if you have young children.

A bat is good. I use heavy steel sais. Good for close quarters and you can throw them.

I wouldn't recommend guns unless you live alone. The key is to make them safe from accidental use and easily accessible. Trigger locks or keeping them in a safe or stashed away in your closet hinders your reaction time. I guess you could always ask the burglar to wait a few minutes so you can grab your gun.

  6. gun would work better then a Samurai sword foir self Defence and a baseball bat would be more effective and much cheaper.

  7. Lol whats to fear

  8. i dont know what a sword costs but a bat around 20-40 bucks from wal-mart. but i would get a gun. i have a shotgun for me. but mostly for hunting. but a .38 is a good gun as well is a .357

  9. Honestly neither is the best choice, but if I had to choose, i would take the bat. If you happen to encounter somebody in a  wide open room they might work well, but what if you run into them in a hallway? Not much room to swing. Even in most rooms there are going to be obsticles. I would take the bat over the sword simply for the fact that most replica swords are not very sharp, and the ones that are tend to stick in stuff, which limits repeated strikes.

I have a .40 caliber Glock that I find helps me sleep at night, along with our rottweiler. I guess it all comes down to what you are comftorble with. My wife and I both are to the point where we feel comftorble with the gun, but then again we do not have small children to worry about. i also keep my surefire flashlight and cell phone by the bed,

Quite honestly the best thing is too make sure all of your doors and windows have good locks on them, and that you have a plan of what to do. Whatever you choose for home defense, just make sure you are adiquitly trained with it.

  10. Well the baseball bat is a blunt weapon where the sword is much sharper, therefore the bat may kill but if you want the effect of blood squirting everywhere, you need to go with the sword.

I would imagine a sword could be purchased in one of those mall sword shops (some have them, others do not) but I feel you would probably pay several hundred dollars.

I don't feel that a weapon is as good at home defense as an alarm would be.  If you are a heavy sleeper, the best sword or baseball bad in the world is not going to help you.  Maybe your best bet would be to get a dog then they would warn you of intruders and hopefully even take care of the intruder for you.

  11. Hi.

The problem with a samurai sword is its size.  It simply isn't very effective in hallways or if you have other objects around that it could strike, you might be able to defend yourself with it but you'd end up trashing your house in the process.

Also a good sword that would be able to stand up to actual use like you are proposing will run you around $300, and we're not even talking authentic/perfectly balanced/whatever, those will run you in the thousands.  There are some decent ones out there for around $200 but I personally wouldn't feel completely safe using them.

A samurai sword would probably work better as a deterrent than an actual home self defense weapon.  If I broke into a house and saw a guy staring at me holding a samurai sword I'd probably run away regardless of how ineffective it would probably prove to be.

If you have your heart set on a sword I'd go with a Wakizashi.  It's like a samurai sword but shorter (and therefore cheaper).  It would be better suited to indoor self defense and since the blade isn't as long it would be less likely to break if the steel quality isn't up to par.  It would still need to be decent quality though lest is shatter, maybe $100 to $200 for a decent one.

Another 'sword' option is a Bokuto (bokken), basically a wooden samurai sword designed for practice.  A little long for indoor use but less damaging to anything you hit.  The cheap ones cost $10 to $20 but even a cheap one will hold up to some heavy use and won't break unless you repeatedly hit something harder.

A soft ball bat would be fine but they are designed for a very one dimensional purpose, hitting a ball.  There are other ways you can strike with them, a jab of sorts for example but for the most part you simply don't have a lot of control with a bat.  Still it would be a fine self defense weapon if that's what you happened to pick up, probably better than a samurai sword for indoor use.

If you are truly concerned about home self defense then I would suggest strategically placing normal everyday objects around the house that you can use as weapons if you need to.  A sturdy umbrella by the door, a letter opener on a desk, a sturdy lamp on a table, maybe a "decorative" Bokuto or Wakizashi (or both in different locations) hanging on the wall, a baseball bat leaning in a corner, a s***w driver in a drawer, a broom in a closet, a knife on the counter, a good sturdy flashlight next to your bed (there are some flashlights that are designed to be used as self defense weapons), a taiser or can of mace somewhere, perhaps even a gun somewhere should a situation ever become so serious, etc...  Plan out what objects you can use as 'improvised' weapons and place these objects around the house in non-conspicuous, easy to get to locations should you ever need them.

    I hope this helps :)

  12. In samurai days way back when they where active ..yes!!

But these days definitely No especially if you live in the UK knife culture here is at an all time high and warrants a lengthy jail sentence and even using a replica Katana would be just throwing your life down the toilet for self defence in the UK ,I cant speak for America or anywhere else, get some serious self defence training or learn to use everyday objects that the law may be more lenient with if things got out of hand.

Just my humble opinion, best wishes :)***
