Has anyone ever been to San Andres Island in Columbia? A fellow coworker from Columbia suggested we visit the Island instead of our original plan to go to Cuba. I checked it out and it is super cheap coming from Canada. March should be perfect weather too... I've done a little research and it does seem absolutely beautiful. How are the beaches? Is it safe?

  1. Yes,it's safe.It is small enough so that everyone knows each other so it doesn't make any sense to do a crime. After all, it's an Island, where are you going to hide? That doesn't mean things don't sometimes disappear so keep your eye on your belongings. The beaches should be fine.I used to work there but I haven't been back in over a year.I'm so glad that you discovered it.It makes me think back to years ago when I first found out about it. Lots of friendly people there so I'm sure you will have a great time. There are some other relatively unknown special places like San Andreas that I have also worked but I don't want to share them here for fear of them being over-run with spring breakers. If you like SA and want to know about some other places email me when you get back.

    Buen Viaje!

  2. yes San Andres is really cheap in comparison to neighbouring islands in the Caribbean.

The most frequented tourists to San Andres Island are Canadians followed by South Koreans. Don't expect to find posh suites, but the Decameron Acuario is definitely the best choice there. An all-inclusive hotel which caters to everything including tips and eating sea food and Colombian food to your heart's content is really reassuring!  Yummy!

The beaches are that large but the sheer beauty of the seven-coloured sea will knock you off your feet!

Finally, the amount of good bargains from all sorts of goods ( San Andres is a Duty Free Port) will also make your trip worthwhile, so take shopping money!

  3. San Andres is wonderful.  Duty Free shopping, if you like to shop. Good diving. Be sure to see the Blow hole (the coco locos are powerful), West view(take your own bread and lots of it)  (They have a glass bottom boat or you can SNUBA. Providencia is about 1/2 hour from there.. but there is NOTHING to do .. 2 hours.. youve walked the island. Also be SURE To go to johnny cay and watch them feed the stingrays. Morgans Cave is hysterically fake, but dont go too far into the hole or youll be eaten alive by mosquitos.. DO rent a golf cart to zoom around the island.. DONT stay at teh sunrise it SUCKS. I like the Mar Azul but the food repeats after three days. Dont eat any of the big reef fish (Barracuda, for example) they have a poison that can make you sick. Try the Ceviches (Shrimp coctail) Rocky Cay is good to go if you are staying at a Decameron and there is a Lobster Restaurant that I forgot the name of that is just past the blow hole. Do take the time to walk to the reservoir and do go to the baptist church for a good view of the island. San Andres is a great place, the people are friendly, and its not that expensive. Stay a day in Bogota too.. youll like it. Email me if you want to know anything else.

  4. San Andres y Providencia are islands that are off the coast of central america, but belong to Colombia. The islands are cheap and beautiful and you can do stuff like go snorkeling.
