San Antonio Silver Stars 42 vs. Los Angeles Sparks 32 - WNBA Game Halftime Analysis
Becky Hammon scored 12 points, three assists and two rebounds to boost the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 42-32 lead over Los Angeles Sparks at halftime on Monday night at Staples Center.
Forward Sophia Young scooped 10 points and pulled down four rebounds while Scholanda Robinson punctuated five points for San Antonio. For Los Angeles, Natasha Lacy came off the bench with a team-high seven points and Ebony Hoffman
scored five points till intermission.
First Quarter
Both of the teams could not score in the first three minutes of the opening period. Hoffman finally broke the jinx when she nailed a jumper to put Sparks ahead. However, Silver Stars responded with 15 consecutive points to go ahead
by 15-2 with 04:44 to go in the frame. Hoffman and DeLisha Milton then combined for three consecutive free throws to cut the deficit to 10 points, 15-5.
The teams cancelled out each other with four points in the next minute, but Young’s lay-up with 02:33 to go gave the Silver Stars a 12-point advantage, 21-9.
Lacy made a three point play on the next Sparks possession to decrease San Antonio’s lead to nine. The Silver Stars however responded with a 5-3 stretch and went ahead by, 11, 26-15, before Jantel Lavender hit a pair of free throw
to bring the lead back down to nine. Hammon however hit a three-pointer in the last seconds of the quarter to stretch Silver Stars lead to 12 points, 29-17, heading into the second period.
Second Quarter
San Antonio started the second quarter from where they left off in the first and widened their lead to 34-19 early. Los Angeles bounced back though and scored seven answered points to make it an eight-point contest, 34-26, with
03:32 to go till the break.
Danielle Adams’ basket on the next San Antonio possession made it 36-26, but Kristi Toliver and LaToya Pringle combined to trim the deficit to seven points, 36-29, with 01:21 remaining. Jia Perkins’ jumper in the last minute propelled
the Silver Stars to a nine-point edge, 38-29. What followed were four free throws from San Antonio separated by a three from O’ Hea to make it 42-32.
