San Antonio Silver Stars’ Becky Hammon named Western Conference Player of the Week – WNBA Update
San Antonio Silver Stars playmaker Becky Hammon has been named WNBA western conference player of the week, for regular season games played Monday, July 25 through Sunday, July 31.
Hammon, who was honoured as one of the Top 15 WNBA players of All-Time during the All-Star weekend recently, continued her stellar campaign during the week by leading the Silver Stars to a 2-1 record. During those three games, Hammon scored at an average of 23.3 points, 5.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game on 55.6 shooting from the field.
Hammon ranks first in the league in assists per game (6.0), sixth in scoring (17.1) and 15th in steals (1.4). The player has received this honour for the very first time this season and seventh time in her career. Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry received the same honour for the Eastern Conference.
Let us take a look into Hammon’s contributions made in the previous week:
Hammon’s game-high vs. Washington Mystics
On July 26, the Silver Stars held off the Washington Mystics 73-67 at Verizon Center on the back of Hammon’s brilliant performance. San Antonio’s guard recorded a game high 22 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the victory. She hit 6 for 13 from the field, including 3 for 6 from three-point range, and a perfect 7 for 7 from free throw line. The 34-year-old scored 13 of her points in the first half as San Antonio held a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Teammate Jia Perkins praised the brilliant performance of Hammon and said, “She runs the team, that's no secret,'' “We follow her. She is our leader.”
Hammon’s 33-point spurt vs. Phoenix Mercury
In the contest against the Phoenix Mercury, the six-time All-Star posted a game high 33 points to help her team beat the opposition with an 11-point margin, 102-91. The player also dished out seven assists, grabbed four rebounds and stole the ball twice. She went 10 for 15 from the floor on the night, pinning 7 of 10 three-pointers, and 6 for 6 from the line.
Hammon’s team-high vs. Minnesota Lynx
Hammon has been the backbone of the Silver Stars for some time. In the last game of the week against Minnesota Lynx, she pounded yet another dominating performance, but choked in the clutch and San Antonio ended up losing by 70-69.
Hammon dropped from 33 points to just 15 and the Silver Stars saw their two-game winning streak snapped. However, Hammon also had six assist and two rebounds in the loss. The player shot 4 for 8 from the field in her 30 minutes of action.
Other Nominees
The six other nominees for the same honour in both the conferences were Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota Lynx), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury), Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) and Crystal Langhorne (Washington Mystics).
