San Antonio Silver Stars and Connecticut Sun win – WNBA Roundup July 26, 2011: Part 1
Ten Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) teams went head-to-head on July 26, 2011. The San Antonio Silver Stars, Connecticut Sun, Minnesota Lynx, Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm came out on top in their games.
Here is the review of the action from Tuesday night.
San Antonio Silver Stars 73 – Washington Mystics 67
San Antonio Silver Stars bounced back from their previous defeat and cruised past Washington Mystics 73-67 for their fifth consecutive victory at Verizon Center. With this victory, the Silver Stars improved to second spot in the Western Conference on the back of a 10-5 record.
Becky Hammon had a game-high 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Hammon shot 6 for 13 from the field, including 3 for 6 from three-point range, and a perfect 7 for 7 from free throw line. Jia Perkins came off the bench with 10 points on a 5 for 9 shooting from the floor.
Forward centre Crystal Langhorne led Washington with 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Marissa Coleman added 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Matee Ajavon contributed 10 points and two steals in the second consecutive loss of Washington.
Silver Stars shot 45.9 percent (28 for 61) from the field while Mystics shot just 37.5 percent (24 for 64). Hammon, a six-time All-Star, scored 13 of her points in the first half as San Antonio held a 37-34 lead at halftime. Washington however limited visiting team to 14 points in the third quarter and tied the game at 51, heading into the fourth.
The game was tied, 57-57, with 06:43 left in the fourth quarter before San Antonio responded with five consecutive points to take control for the rest of the period.
Connecticut Sun 77 – Chicago Sky 66
At Allstate Arena, four Connecticut players reached double figures as Sun beat the Chicago Sky 77-66, snapping their four-game home winning streak.
Asjha Jones headed all scorers on the night with 22 points, six rebounds and two blocks. She pinned 7 for 7 free throws.
Tina Charles scored one point less than Jones, contributing 21 points on 10 for 17 shooting from the field. Charles also pulled down a game best 15 rebounds and blocked three shots. Guards Renee Montgomery and Kara Lawson posted 14 points each in the victory.
Epiphanny Prince led Sky with 16 points. The league’s leading scorer Sylvia Fowles recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards while Tamera Young had 10 points, five assists and two steal for Chicago. Sky committed 20 turnovers as compared to just nine by the Sun.
