San Antonio Silver Stars defeat Los Angeles Sparks 94-80 – WNBA Recap
Thursday night at the AT&T Center, San Antonio Silver Stars managed their way to a 94-80 victory over Los Angeles Sparks.
Sophia Young led the way with 23 points and 5 rebounds while Becky Hammon managed to chip in with 17 points and 6 assists.
``On paper, we probably don't look like a good matchup for them,'' Hammon said. ``And I think that's generally what people think. But you got to go out there and play the game. I think we have a rally focused approach with them.''
Shameka Christon also played well in the game and by shooting the ball 5 of 6 from the field and 4 of 5 from three point land, she mustered up 15 points.
At the same time, Danielle Adams and Jia Perkins kept the bench scoring alive for San Antonio by managing to score 14 and 12 points respectively.
The win for Silver Stars ensure that they complete an away and home sweep over the LA based team who have now lost their third straight game.
On the other hand a double digit effort from five of LA`s players was not enough to overturn a sound San Antonio team.
Candace Parker recorded a double-double in the game by managing 25 points and 13 rebounds while DeLisha Milton and Alana Beard mustered up 14 points each.
Nneka Ogwumike shot the ball 5 of 12 from the field for 10 points. April Sykes came off the bench to record 11 points to her name.
San Antonio got off to a great start as they raced their way to a 14-4 advantage early. Silver Stars continued to dominate for the rest of first quarter and by its close were leading 28-17.
A 7-2 run to start of the second quarter allowed them to push their advantage to 16. A lead they were able to protect till the interval by outscoring LA 22-18 for the remaining time in the period.
As dominant as San Antonio were in the first half by continuously moving the ball around and finding their way to the basket allowed them to hold a 57-37 advantage at the interval.
San Antonio started the second half the same way they started the game, coming out of break with 9-0 run to start the period prolonged their lead to 29 points.
Even though Sparks responded with an 8-2 run of their own but the Stars held such an ample advantage that they took a comfortable 74-55 into the final quarter.
Sparks started off the fourth quarter with a 7-3 in order to chip down the lead but an 8-0 response from the Stars pushed the advantage back to 23 points.
In the next four minutes, LA even managed to conjure up an 10-2 burst but the lead was so large that San Antonio still led by double figures.
Sparks even outscored the home team 6-2 in the final minutes but it did not have any effect on the eventual outcome of the game as San Antonio closed the proceedings still ahead by 14 points.
