San Antonio Silver Stars dominate fourth period to steal victory against New York Liberty – WNBA Recap
The San Antonio Silver Stars played an outstanding fourth quarter to turn the game around and take a 77-66 victory over the New York Liberty here at the AT&T Center in San Antonio on Tuesday.
The Silver Stars outscored New York 22-9 in the fourth period, bringing an end to the Liberty’s three game winning streak. Danielle Robinson had 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for San Antonio, going an impressive 9 of 11 from
the field to lead her team to victory. Shameka Christon added 17 points for the Silver Stars, going a red hot 5 of 7 from the distance.
Cappie Pondexter scored 23 points for New York, going 11 of 22 from the field and 1 of 6 from the distance.
“What was exciting to me was the way we played defensively in the second half, and specifically, in the fourth quarter. (It was) some of the best defence we have played all year against a team that is a good basketball team,” said
San Antonio Coach Dan Hughes after the game.
San Antonio started the game red hot from the field, going on a 9-0 run with Robinson scoring six straight points. New York came back into the game soon after that, and a turnaround jump shot by Kia Vaughn had the Liberty trailing
10-13.
San Antonio held on to a 16-14 lead going into the second period. A three pointer by Essence Carson early in the second quarter put New York up 19-18. After an exchange of a barrage of three pointers, a layup by Robinson tied the
game at 29. New York ended the 1st half with a 37-32 lead after Kara Braxton hit a jump shot near the end of the period.
Four back to back points by Robinson early in the third period had San Antonio trailing 38-39, but New York managed to retain the lead and Carson’s jump shot put New York up 47-40 with a little over five minutes left in the period.
Danielle Adams scored five straight points for San Antonio to tie the game at 53.
Having trailed much of the third period, San Antonio picked up their game in the final period and nailed back to back three pointers to take a 63-59 lead. Two free throws by Robinson with 1:19 left in the game gave San Antonio
a 72-63 lead, and when Robinson nailed a jump shot immediately after, the fate of the game was sealed. New York only managed to score 9 points in the final 10 minutes and lost 66-77.
San Antonio shot an impressive 42.9 percent from the distance, compared to New York who shot only 18.8 percent from the same distance. They also went 14 of 16 from the foul line, while New York managed only two free throws over
the duration of the game.
